Windhoek to write off debt of economically unable pensioners, grant amnesty to traffic offenders

City of Windhoek Mayor, Dr Job Amupanda, in his maiden annual mayoral address, said that the City of Windhoek will write off the debt of the economically unable pensioners and reconnect the water supply. The mayor also announced that the city will grant amnesty to traffic offenders. “The newly elected leadership is here to show sympathy and empathy to the residents of Windhoek. Over the past 30 years, post-independence, the residents of Windhoek have been punished and we are here to change that,” said Amupanda. Traffic offenders will instead be given six hours of community service as an alternative to paying the fine. The amnesty for traffic fines is, however, only for those fines issued prior to 2 December 2020. The council has also set up a task force, to be headed by the deputy mayor, to develop a blueprint to deal with sexual and gender-based violence. Amupanda also announced that public open spaces owned by the city will be open to be adopted by the community and turned into community parks. He further described the city’s past action of removing shacks, which are set up illegally, as brutal, and degrading. “The demolition of shacks will also stop with immediate effect,” he said.
