The Rundu Town Council (RTC) management has proposed a new tariff increment for the 2026/2027 financial period. The proposed budget for this financial period is N$485 million. The council held a stakeholders meeting for input.
Sam Nekaro, the Strategic Executive for Finance and IT at the RTC, explained that "the proposed budget has increased by N$176 million. That is an increment of about 57%. But we operate on what we call a cost recovery basis."
The cost recovery basis does not seem to be effective with residents owing the council more than N$600 million.
"The provisional rates and taxes for the financial year 2026/2027 amount to N$27 million. We want to do what we call an environmental impact assessment at the cost of N$100,000. We would like to review the town scheme of Rundu for N$3 million. We would like to acquire or upgrade a GIS at the cost of N$300,000. We would like to do the town planning activities for N$600,000. We would like to do a land survey for N$2 million. We would want to acquire a plotter at the cost of N$150,000, and we would like to do an internal evaluation at the cost of N$450,000."
