Ondangwa Town Council has dismissed as false a report in a local newspaper that it had donated a piece of land valued at N$300,000 to its former mayor, Paavo Amwele.

A group of concerned Keetmanshoop residents protested against the municipality over alleged poor governance, financial mismanagement, nepotism, corruption and poor service delivery.

Kavango East Swapo Party Councillor Andreas Jikerwa has been sworn in as the Mayor of Rundu, deputised by Regina Nekare, also from the same party.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Katima Mulilo Town Council, Raphael Liswaniso, has been suspended indefinitely and without salary or benefits, with all council properties withdrawn except for a cellphone.

Sethy Gariseb, a social justice activist, wrote a letter to his office complaining about poor service delivery, which prompted the visit.

The Mariental Municipality has written off municipal debts amounting to over N$1.2 million owed by senior citizens.

The decision follows a council resolution taken at an ordinary meeting held in September.
