Learners of Windhoek's Eldorado Secondary School were left in shock when a teacher was stabbed by a parent on Thursday morning.

A teacher was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver. He was taken to the hospital and he is said to be in stable condition.

The Head of the Department at the school, Rachel Dedig told nbc News that the teacher had slapped a learner as a form of discipline on Wednesday, who then informed his father.

She said during the staff members' daily meeting on Thursday morning, the Grade 9 teacher did not attend.

The HoD says the next thing that happened was a learner barging into the meeting screaming.

"A learner came screaming telling us that one man stabbed Mr. Kalola, we ran out of the staff room and saw the commotion. Mr. Kalola was bleeding."

Dedig emphasized on disciplinary policies of the school and procedures that ought to be followed.

"They are procedures to be followed, so you have to come and see the principal, and the principal has disciplinary matters to follow."

Learners were left severely shocked and some highlighted the effects of corporal punishment in schools.

The lessons had to continue, as learners wished their teacher a speedy recovery.
