The regional leadership and residents of Kavango West Region are disappointed at the poor service delivery by NamPower and Northern Electricity Distributor company.

The power utilities held a regional stakeholder engagement at Nkurenkuru on the frequent power outages in the region.

Participants at the engagement including Governor Sirkka Ausiku did not mince their words in calling on the companies to improve their services with immediate effect.

"Our community as I said is frustrated, they are angry and they are fed up with service delivery as far as the provision of electricity is concerned in our region."

The business owners in attendance are also feeling the pinch at the regular power outages including unscheduled ones.

The residents called on NamPower to introduce a second supply line to the Kavango West Region and a dedicated kilovolt line for Nkurenkuru.

The Otjikoto-Masivi line from Tsumeb to Rundu is the only one supplying power to the two Kavango Regions.

Nkurenkuru is supplied on a rural line unlike all urban centers, which causes frequent power interruptions in the town.

NamPower's Head for System Security and Planning Kandara Mukusuka says plans are afoot to upgrade the Masivi-Mpasi substations link to improve the quality of supply.

Mukusuka proposed that a redundancy line direct to Kavango West could also be an alternative to consider in future network planning.

NORED's Technical Executive Petnen Frans says Kavango West along with Kavango East and Zambezi are prone to lightning strikes, causing power outages.

Frans also emphasized the need to guard against vandalism of power infrastructure through the theft of copper wire.
