Residents of Uupopo Proper and Uupopo number one will now have plots in their names after the Ondangwa Town Council formalized the areas.
Ondangwa Town Council Public Relations Officer Patrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha explained that the council saw it fit to formalize the informal settlement to improve the living standard of residents.
Residents who are working are now able to use their housing subsidies and build decent houses unlike in the past when this was prohibited.
Part of Uupopo is yet to be serviced with sewer reticulation but the larger portion of the settlement is fully serviced with water, electricity and sewer.
"The good news is that in all other areas of Ondangwa, the price for a square meter ranges from 150 to 180, however, the council put various factors into consideration, and looking into the economic situation of the country we have decided that the residents of Uupopo can buy the residential plots at a mere N$10 per square meters and business are charged N$20 per square meter, this is really good news for residents of Uupopo."
Uupopo has 600 mixed plots for residential and business purposes.
This is how residents welcomed the formalization of Uupopo.
"We have residential and business plots here at Uupopo and I am grateful to the town council's choice to formalize our area we are now empowered and are able to have our own title deeds, I am very excited."
The Council also formalized Onguta extension 28 in 2017, which has 367 mixed plots.
Ondangwa Town Council is expected to proclaim Onatsi and Onatsi Proper and Okangwena.
Once proclaimed the areas will be formalized.
