There is a need to improve the proportion of male entrants to the country's universities.
Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, who is also Chancellor of the University of Namibia (UNAM), said this at the UNAM Southern Campus' 2023 graduation ceremony, held at Keetmanshoop.
240 students received certificates, diplomas, and degrees in the fields of health, geosciences, education, commerce, and law during the Unam Southern Campus graduation ceremony.
"It still hurts and worries me to learn that overall, the people we are graduating, whether here or at the main campus, 66% of the graduates this year are beautiful people, while we the boys are only 34%, thus the ratio, which is not pleasing at all. This trend is worrisome and requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders, from everybody, family, clan, community, whatever we need to improve this."
UNAM Vice-Chancellor Kenneth Matengu called on the graduates to be thoughtful and responsible leaders in society.
"You have gained valuable knowledge and skills through your studies, but your purpose goes beyond just academic qualifications, and as a nation, we are currently in the year of revival, as has been declared by President Hage Geingob of the Republic of Namibia. Therefore, this is the time when we are all called to reflect on our past, examine our present, and envision our future. It is time to renew our commitment to our country and to our people."
