In light of a new resolution aimed at celebrating international sports events under the theme Development of Sport and Peace by the United Nations General Assembly, the Namibia National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association will celebrate the day with primary and secondary school leaners at the Osire Refugee Camp on Wednesday. Osire is situated 200 km north of the capital Windhoek. It was established in 1992 to accommodate refugees from Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Somalia. The camp grew quickly in its early years, reaching a peak of 20,000 inhabitants in 1998. Since then the refugee population of Osire has decreased steadily. President of the Namibia National Olympic Committee Abner Xoagub explained that since most Namibian children are already fortunate to be able to participate in sport in peace, this year's objective will be to give disadvantaged children from different backgrounds an opportunity to take part in sport as well.
