The Kavango West Region and Nkurenkuru in particular will soon boast modernised sports facilities.

The Executive Director in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and National Service said money was availed for the first phase of the project, which is to commence this year.

The Ministry of Youth, Sport and National Service acquired a 40-hectare plot at Nkurenkuru for the construction of the multipurpose youth centre.

Briefing the Kavango West Regional Council on the development, amid calls from residents, was the Executive Director in the Youth Ministry Erastus Mbumba Haitengela.

Haitengela said the plan is to have all planned facilities ready within three years.

“Remember the project it’s two-parts. We are talking about youth multipurpose centre and sport side of it and we are saying as government sport side of it is something we can do very quickly and that's why we mobilized the youth to be part of cleaning of the site we do not want to see contractors coming and clearing the bush while the youth can do it the little cents we have we want to give to the youth” Haitengela said.

About 300 youths were hired to clean the plot while work is underway on the environmental impact assessment, feasibility study and drawing documentation.

Kavango West Chief Regional Officer Mpasi Haingura said two-million dollars are already with the regional council for de-bushing and earthwork.

“Our request from the ministry of sport is to ensure that we start with field B. Field B is where we can just ensure that the Netball court, Volleyball court it could be ready within a period of one year or two if longer . But our target should be in a period of one year and of course the Soccer pitch we need just to level the ground so that we can have an available soccer pitch that can be utilize for sport activities in the region” Haingura said.

The Ministry of Sports has availed 10-million Namibia dollars to make sure that Kavango West has a modern Football pitch, Netball and Volleyball courts at least by next year.

The region's under-20 football team triumphed and won The Namibian Newspaper Cup over the weekend, despite training on bare and uneven pitches.

The win intensified the calls from the regional leadership for the Ministry to develop land it acquired about three years ago.
