Freedom fighter and veteran of the liberation struggle, 99-year-old Pelagia Eelu, was buried at Otshitutuma Cemetery in Oshikuku Constituency in the Omusati Region.

President  Hage Geingob conferred an official funeral on her.

Eelu who was described as a strong supporter of the country's liberation struggle, died in Windhoek on 4th May.

She was born in Okapuku Village in the Omusati Region and joined Swapo Party at the early stage of its establishment.

Together with others, she began political activities, mobilizing the masses to join the now ruling party and encouraging them to partake in the war of national liberation.

Her homestead became a point of assembly and a safe haven for PLAN Combatants.

She fed, housed, and clothed PLAN fighters putting her life and those of her family at risk as PLAN fighters also hid their weapons in her home.

In a message delivered on his behalf, President Geingob applauded Eelu's unwavering determination to do whatever it took to assist PLAN fighters until victory was achieved.

"Indeed, she, in turn, became a dedicated patriot who served Namibia with distinction during the national liberation struggle."

In her message of condolence, delivered on her behalf Swapo Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa says Eelu's name will forever be embedded in the history of Namibia for her heroic deeds.

"She was indeed a fearless freedom fighter whose courage and determination for the independence of her country superseded the continuous harassment she faced from the apartheid regime and its collaborators."

Her fearless actions made her home to become a logistic hub for large quantities of weapons and ammunition for PLAN fighters, especially when launching attacks on enemy bases.

This prompted Founding President Sam Nujoma to award Eelu the grand commander of the most excellent order of Namibia in 2003.

Nujoma's message of condolences too was delivered on his behalf.

"We thus mourn the passing of a brave comrade, a gallant freedom fighter and one of the foremost pioneers of our national liberation struggle who has served the Namibia people with distinction and tenacity. Out:

Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba described Eelu as one of Namibian's extraordinary women who gave their all for the country's liberation and political emancipation.

Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will remember her generosity, love for her family and community and her fearless character.
