The leader of the Landless People's Movement (LPM), Bernadus Swartbooi, has called for NamPower to be dismantled, saying the power utility has failed to generate sufficient energy for the country.

Swartbooi says Namibia's dependence on South Africa and Zambia for electricity could one day leave the country in the dark.

At a media conference, Swartbooi said Namibia is currently at the mercy of ESKOM and ZESCO.

"The darker side of reality, however, paints a concerning picture, as both of these power stations have expressed that they are having internal issues. ZESCO is making multi-million-dollar losses that began in 2020, and Eskom doesn't have enough cash flow to run its operations for almost $20 billion. In the instance of Eskom, you may have a political fallout in which political decisions may be taken to ensure that electricity does not go outside of South Africa. Where will we be in such a crisis situation?"

LPM believes that over the decades, the power utility company has not taken the required meaningful action to generate the desired energy to fulfil the country's aim for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

The party recommends that NamPower be dismantled.

"For the past 33 years, they just kept on buying and selling. We don't need it. A department in the Ministry of Mines and Energy is enough to do the job. We can have a director of electricity at the Ministry of Mines to buy and sell electricity. The ECB can be given a greater mandate to further regulate but also be charged with the responsibility of helping to maintain the infrastructure. The REDS can be given a mandate to further maintain their infrastructure."

LPM also recommends that Namibia venture into massive solar energy projects to generate its own energy.

The party also reiterated its call to have the country's electricity debt written off.
