The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) endorsed SWAPO MP Jerry Ekandjo's proposed Private Member's Bill passed in the National Assembly to define the term 'spouse' and amend the Marriage Act of 1961.

This follows the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, which the union says has the potential to disrupt harmony in society.

Pronouncing its stance on the matter, the NUNW states that the passing of the Private Members Bill reflects a strong consensus among lawmakers in aligning the definition of spouse' with Namibia's traditional understanding of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The union heaped praise on Ekandjo's move to propose the anti-gay bill, which it says will advance the interests of Namibians, as the ruling on same-sex marriages could have far-reaching consequences that disrupt working relations and build up tension within society.

As the National Council deliberates the matter, the union will monitor in anticipation of the actions and decisions of the House of Review.
