Vice President Nangolo Mbumba says the Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) has recorded key achievements with the help of the community advisory committee for transparency.
Mbumba was speaking at the celebration of the 17th Correctional Service Day at Omaruru.
The Namibia Correctional Service implemented the offender risk management strategy in 2010, which has been instrumental in enhancing the effectiveness of the correctional system and ensuring successful rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.
The Community Advisory Committee is made up of volunteers.
The successful implementation of the 2017–2022 strategic plan has also resulted in the expansion of rehabilitation at four more correctional facilities, which Mbumba says is commendable.
Efforts are, however, needed to ensure the correctional service has enough officers, as the current shortage of correctional officers has negatively impacted daily responsibilities.
The Namibia Correctional Service also reflected on its achievements and the impact it has had on society.
Officers who served correctional service from ten years up were conferred long service medals.
NCS Commissioner General Raphael Hamunyela was awarded a high order for his continuous service on the grounds of ability, efficiency, perseverance, and devotion.
The 17th National Correctional Service celebration was held under the theme 'Striving towards a safe society through rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders'.
