The Namibian Police are making significant progress in infrastructural development in all 14 regions.
This was said by the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Dr. Albert Kawana, when he inaugurated the Nkurenkuru Police Station in the country's youngest region, Kavango West.
The station, constructed at a cost of more than N$108 million, consists of a charge office, four holding cells, 42 offices, a doctor's consulting room, cell blocks, four vehicles, fuel tanks, and various other amenities.
"A properly equipped Force can deliver better services to its community, hence the development of this facility. The Government will continue to do its best to develop an effective policing service by providing sufficient resources despite economic challenges," said Dr. Kawana.
The Inspector General of NamPol, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, says the new premises will go a long way in addressing some of the challenges faced by the force.
"NamPol continues to experience the challenge of a lack of sufficient offices, which are crucial for members of the force to deliver quality service to our communities effectively and efficiently. These challenges negatively impact the deployment strategies of personnel."
Also speaking on the occasion was the Governor of Kavango West, Sirkka Ausiku, who said, "For investors to come to any region or in a town like Nkurenkuru, they will do that if they know that their investments and where they put up properties will be protected. This is always done by the police and community."
At the inauguration, the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security also took the opportunity to warn unscrupulous members of the force to refrain from unbecoming conduct.
"I am certain that police officers are aware that their duty is to apprehend criminals, not to be criminals themselves. Therefore, it is unacceptable to learn that some police officers connive with criminals and, in some cases, even assist them in escaping after other patriotic and loyal members have apprehended such criminals. This must come to an end!"
Apart from the new Nkurenkuru police station, a charge office has also been inaugurated at Namasira in the Mpungu Constituency of Kavango West.
Namasira is the border separating Kavango West from Ohangwena.
