Athletes from the Erongo region will take part in a Special Olympics sports day at the Playtime sports complex in Walvis Bay on Saturday,.

The event's goal is to unite male and female athletes while motivating them to reach their best potential.

A global association called Special Olympics supports athletes who have intellectual disabilities and developmental delays.

Through a number of programme initiatives, the Association works to promote the wellbeing and involvement of these athletes.

This weekend, people and kids with and without intellectual impairments will join together to participate in a variety of sports as volunteers, coaches, special Olympics directors, and community activists.

The purpose of the sports day is to select and prepare participants for regional and national competitions.

The Special Olympic sport day will include Athletics, Soccer and recreational Volleyball.

"On Saturday we will have an event for Special Olympic which is for children between the age group of two years of age upwards. We are anticipating a large number of parents, coaches and athletes. We even planned to host a Volleyball game to introduce the code to the athletes so they are aware and familiar with all sports codes. " said of of Special Olympics in Erongo region Susana Hangula.

The Multipurpose Centre in Walvis Bay will host a coaching training session on Friday before to the sports day.

The sporting events will start on Saturday.
