About 290 project employees of Hangana Seafood have voiced their discontentment with the employment conditions they are experiencing following an agreement reached with the government for their reinstatement in 2021.

The group is alleging that the company is enlisting fishermen from external sources to serve on boat vessels while relegating them to roles as factory fish processors.

This allocation was not in accordance with the agreed terms, prompting their dissatisfaction.

The group is steadfast in their demand to be engaged as active fishermen on sea voyages, as opposed to their current roles as processors in the factory.

Furthermore, their demand extends to a call for the cessation of any recruitment of new fishermen while they remain stationed in the factory.

Workers also complain that their initial employment entailed a basic salary of N$4,000 for a span of five months, which falls short of the standard basic salary for other fish processors at Hangana, which amounts to N$5,600.

The group urged the ministries of the Ministry of Labour and Fisheries to exercise vigilant oversight over government projects of similar nature to ensure that resources are promptly and accurately allocated to the designated beneficiaries in accordance with the agreements in place.

The petition outlining these concerns and demands has been submitted to both the company and the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
