PDM calls on President Mbumba to take charge of fishing industry

The leader of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), McHenry Venaani, has called on President Nangolo Mbumba to look into the affairs of the fishing industry. 

Venaani made the remarks while joining the demonstration by the fishermen employed through the Government Employment Redress Programme, who handed over petitions to the Ministries of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation and that of Fisheries at Walvis Bay.

Blue Sea Fishing Company fishermen to receive personal finance skills training

The Secretary General of the Mining, Metal, Maritime, and Construction Union, Joseph ||Garoeb, says that fishermen employed by Blue Sea Fishing Company on the Estai Vessel will receive training on personal finance skills and financial wellness to equip them to better manage their finances as their salaries increase.

This was highlighted by ||Garoeb during the two-year wages and conditions signing agreement between the company and the union at Walvis Bay.

October Seafarers United Land and Housing Federation launched

Fishermen at Walvis Bay have established the October Seafarers United Land and Housing Federation, which will negotiate affordable land and housing for seafarers.

In 2015, a strike in the fishing industry led to massive job losses, and as a result, fishermen used to camp at the Kuisebmond stadium at Walvis Bay.

Eventually, the government stepped in and consulted companies to re-employ the people.

Although they had no physical employment, the fishermen were on the companies' payroll, and they decided to create a land and housing savings group.

Hangana workers unhappy

About 290 project employees of Hangana Seafood have voiced their discontentment with the employment conditions they are experiencing following an agreement reached with the government for their reinstatement in 2021.

The group is alleging that the company is enlisting fishermen from external sources to serve on boat vessels while relegating them to roles as factory fish processors.

This allocation was not in accordance with the agreed terms, prompting their dissatisfaction.

Fisheries and Labour ministries sign agreement to re-employ fishermen

The Ministries of Fisheries and Labour signed an agreement with two fishing companies to re-employ part of the 1130 unemployed fishermen who lost their jobs eight years ago.

The signing comes after a few delays in the Attorney General's office reviewing the contracts.

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, made the announcement during a media briefing at Walvis Bay.

These fishermen, who were previously employed by various fishing companies, lost their jobs as a result of their participation in an illegal strike.

Some opposition parliamentarians have objected to the indefinite postponement on the motivation of the report of the mass resignation of fishermen. 

The report was compiled by the National Assembly Select Committee appointed and tasked by the House Speaker to investigate the mass resignation of fishermen employed through the government Redressing Programme. 

The Committee Chairperson Tjekero Tweya postponed the motivation indefinitely just as he was about to motivate it.

Government to negotiate with fishing industry to employ more than 500 fishermen at Walvis Bay

The Namibian government will negotiate with the fishing industry to employ more than 500 fishermen who earlier this year resigned en masse at Walvis Bay.

This was revealed by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen.

During his annual address in Walvis Bay, the minister stated that the government is doing everything possible to get the group of fishermen employed.

About 31 small scale fish farmers, fishermen and fishmongers in Oshana trained

About 31 small-scale fish farmers, fishermen, and fishmongers in Uulili, in the Oshana Region, are undergoing training to be equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in the sector.

The training is being conducted in collaboration with the UN agency Food and Agriculture Organization by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

The training will engage the fisheries sector at the grassroots level and gauge the views of locals at fishing spot areas.
