Swapo Party MP Patience Masua has called for support of the Magistrates' Courts Amendment Bill to ensure a more just and prosperous future for all citizens.

In her contribution to the bill, Masua highlighted significant strides towards achieving justice and a prosperous Namibia—the one that offers solutions to the housing crisis, improves access to justice, and creates economic opportunities.

Masua stressed the need to make home repossessions a last resort, considering the housing backlog. 

She recognised the concerns of the financial sector and proposed streamlined processes to support financiers while addressing the housing need.

"The proposed amendments to the Magistrates Courts Act recognise the deep and lasting impact of losing one's home. Our goal is to protect the sanctity of the home, to safeguard families, and to ensure that the right to housing is respected. This is why we have introduced Section 66A, which will restrict the sale of immovable property in the execution of a court judgement. This change is more than just a legal adjustment; it is a reflection of our commitment to compassionate governance."

Masua underscored the significant increase in the jurisdiction of lower courts, making justice more accessible to all citizens.

"The expansion of the jurisdiction of magistrates' courts is not just about justice; it's also about economic empowerment. As we anticipate an increase in cases at these courts, we are committed to creating more job opportunities for our legal professionals. This means more magistrates, legal aid lawyers, and prosecutors. It means improved court infrastructure and support systems to expedite cases. This change is not only about legal proceedings; it's about stimulating economic growth."
