The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has almost doubled, from over 6,000 last year to 10,802 this year.
However, these cases were only recorded at eight health facilities in the |Khomas Region, and the figures could be higher.
The figures were presented at the commemoration of World Diabetes Day in Windhoek.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services has put up screening facilities at all health facilities across the country.
The Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Utjiua Muinjangue, said screening and taking medication are not enough to control diabetes; lifestyle adjustments are needed.
Screenings for diabetes are free from Monday to Friday this week at Windhoek and Katutura Hospitals, and the public is urged to capitalise on the opportunity.
Some of the signs of diabetes are frequent urination, constant thirst, dry mouth, general body weakness, and sweaty hands.
