In a significant event marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare in the Zambezi Region held a commemoration at Chetto, Kongola constituency, on Wednesday.

This initiative underscores the region's commitment to combating this critical issue.

The day, which included activities such as poems, dramas, and musical performances, was celebrated under the theme: UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls.

Speaking on behalf of the Namibian police regional commander for Zambezi Commissioner, Andreas Shilelo, Warrant Officer Ines Mutibali emphasised the importance of hosting the event in the chosen area.

The councillor for Kabbe North Constituency, Bernard Sisamu, who spoke on behalf of the regional governor, Alufea Sampofu, highlighted the high rise in the common forms of GBV while singling out domestic violence and sexual abuse as the most common.

Sisamu said that there is a need to invest in GBV prevention through combined efforts from the government, civil society, churches, traditional authorities, developmental partners, and private partners.
