The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund recorded ten fatalities since the 10th of December.

Its Senior Accident and Injury Prevention Officer, Abner Iitumba, is calling on road users to be extra cautious on the road.

Since December 10, the MVA has recorded 73 crashes, resulting in 138 injuries and 14 fatalities.

"So the road is full now as people are travelling from place to place in the north. We have a lot of vehicles. Like now, on this side of the four regions, we have people who are going to certain events, but we have to exercise caution because at these events people are also using alcohol. Please, if you know that you are going to drive a vehicle, don't consume alcohol unless you have somebody who can assist you."

Iitumba also warned drivers to refrain from transporting passengers on the loading box to minimise risks.

"You will find them standing, and they are travelling long ways. The road is full, and for everybody, all the accidents that we are mentioning here, as the statistics given, are because of the minds of the people we don't want to obey road traffic signs or even traffic officers on duty."

Iitumba also raised a concern about the high number of injuries recorded on national roads, saying they negatively affect families.

"Remember, if people are injured, most of them are not able to go back to their work, and the economy of the country will be down. This is a problem because the money that we use to treat people for medical treatment is very expensive."
