The effects of technology on society have been both positive and negative. While technology has made it easier to connect with others, it is also threatening livelihoods.

Speaking of smartphones, the traditional photography industry is among those that has started to feel the pinch, particularly the younger generation that has for years made a living from it.

Young photographers, who often charge for their services to snap pictures of tourists in Swakopmund and other locations, say technology has negatively impacted their business.

They said the need for photographers' services has declined as people now use more of their smartphones that have better quality to take pictures.

22-year-old James Shipapa, one of those who make a living from photography, says smartphones are their main rivals.

Another is 23-year-old Kanyunara Ladislaus, who stated that they are losing the majority of their customers and that most families also own cameras; they no longer require photographers.

24-year-old Kashkora Romanus, a student in the field of education who has been taking photos to earn money for his studies, said business is becoming slow as smartphones replace the conventional camera.

For many families, photo albums were an essential item for preserving memories and unique occasions that allowed them to connect with the past.

But since the emergence of social media accounts, a paradigm shift is evident.
