Two people died and two remain in critical condition after a hand grenade exploded at their homestead in Lumina village in the Mpacha area on Friday evening.

The family of four, including the father, 34-year-old Kashako Mulatehi, and his three children, Mulatehi Mulatehi, Yamuno Mulatehi, and Lydia Mulatehi, all sustained serious injuries.

14-year-old Yamuno Mulatehi died on the spot, while his 9-year-old sister Lydia Mulatehi died at the Katima Mulilo State Hospital, where they were rushed for medical care.

The father, Kashako Mulatehi, was transferred to Windhoek for further medical care on Friday night, and his remaining child, Mulatehi Mulatehi, also in a critical condition, will also be transferred to Windhoek for further care.

A report by the Namibian police in Zambezi Region states that the victims were collecting scrap metal in the Liselo area, where they also picked up the hand grenade.

Upon arrival at their homestead in Lumina village, the father, Kashako Mulatehi, while in the presence of his three children, began hammering the device with an axe, causing it to explode, the police said.
