Lack of value addition to the livestock subsector, inadequate access to potable water, poor network coverage, and rural electrification are some of the key areas that need attention to address regional development in the Omaheke Region.

These matters were brought to the attention of the 6th National Development Plan meeting in Gobabis.

The meeting discussed developmental challenges faced by the communities.

The Chief National Development Advisor in the National Planning Commission, Itha Ndjarakana, indicated that interventions to activate the beef value chain, re-open, and fully utilise existing abattoirs and feedlots will change the status quo of the farmers.

Ndjarakana added that some urban and semiurban areas face water shortages.

He said some resettled farmers lack proper facilities to access water and frequent rehabilitation of the boreholes.

The vastness of the region is also limiting some rural areas' access to radio and mobile coverage networks, noted Ndjarakana.

Although the government has electrified government institutions, rural electrification still remains a challenge at the household level.
