Strong winds blew off the roofs of three blocks at Ekango-Linene Combined School in Etayi Circuit, Omusati Region.

The damage occurred to the block that accommodates approximately 100 Grade 3 learners.

The block's walls were damaged, and classes were under water, causing further damage to classroom displays on the notice boards and posing a setback to teaching and learning for both teachers and learners at the school.

The damage to the block is estimated to be around N$7,000.

The school principal, Dasken Mushabati, says the storm also uprooted trees.

He further indicated that the relocation of learners into the computer lab has paralysed the provision of computer studies at the school as the practicals had to be discontinued due to the unavailability of spaces.

Mushabati also indicated that there is another block with rotten rafters, and he fears for the worse if prompt interventions are not made. 

He also highlighted that the school is in dire need of six additional classrooms to cater for Design and Technology learners, who are currently taught in a corrugated iron building, and an overcrowded staff room consisting of 38 staff members who sometimes resort to sitting under the tree and using their vehicles when marking.

While he acknowledges that all problems cannot be solved in one day, the school is appealing to business people, non-governmental and governmental organisations, and private individuals to come forth and support the school," concludes Mushabati.

A school board member and a teacher, Fiina Shikongo, said they no longer can work as usual, as the classes affected are junior primary, which had displays on the wall that were spoiled by rainwater.

Ekangolinene Combined School has 973 learners, of whom 471 are girls and 502 are boys.
