The Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) will pronounce itself on the matter of same-sex marriages after in-depth deliberations at its meeting scheduled for next week.

This is contained in a statement that the CCN leadership presented to President Nangolo Mbumba at State House.

The religious leaders referred to the Private Member's Bills, tabled by MP Jerry Ekandjo and passed by both houses of Parliament last year.

President Mbumba is to sign or reject the bills, which comprise the Marriage Amendment Private Members Bill and the Definition of a Spouse Private Members Bill.

The CCN Executive Committee Chairperson, Heino Mouton, says the Council would also provide the position of the church.

"CCN is aware that His Excellency is facing the challenge of signing two bills, but in our Council of Church Leaders Meeting that is scheduled for next week, CCN will discuss this matter in depth and will give a response as it is part of the agenda at the meeting."

The Minister of Home Affairs tabled a comprehensive Marriage Bill this week this week that aims to overwrite many pieces of legislation pertaining to marriage, the definition of a spouse, and outlawing the recognition of same-sex marriages even if they were solemnised in a foreign country where such is recognised.
