Katrina Hanse-Himarwa's tenure as Minister of Education was marked by her relentless pursuit of quality education.
These are the sentiments of Deputy Minister Faustina Caley, who says Hanse-Himarwa was a dedicated educator who initiated many noteworthy programmes while serving as minister.
The deputy minister was speaking at a candlelight vigil in honour of the late former minister in Windhoek.
Staff at the Education Ministry's headquarters are still coming to terms with the death of their former minister, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa.
Deputy Minister Caley said the former minister's passing left a void in the hearts of those she worked with, including those she served. She described the late minister as a beacon of strength and resilience who showed an unwavering commitment to the improvement of education.
"She understood that education is the foundation upon which the future of our nation is built. Her policies and initiatives aim to bridge the gap in our education system. Especially for those in rural and marginalised communities, she was a strong advocate for equity and inclusivity, believing that every child, regardless of their background, deserves a fair chance to succeed in life."
Among many other projects Hanse-Himarwa initiated was the 'Friends of Education", a project lauded by her former colleagues.
"Katrina was a visionary leader who saw the potential for greatness in our education system. She spearheaded the numerous reforms and projects that modernised our schools, integrated technology into classrooms, and promoted lifelong learning."
Executive Director Sanet Steenkamp and other staff members also shared light encounters they had with Hanse-Himarwa in the corridors of the ministry.
