President Mbumba describes Hanse-Himarwa as a diamond of the south

President Nangolo Mbumba has described the late Katrina Hanse-Himarwa as a pivotal figure in the nation's quest for freedom who was devoted to the pursuit of national development and accessible education.

In a tribute read by Deputy Prime Minister John Mutorwa, Mbumba described Hanse-Himarwa as a distinguished servant and a diamond of the south.

Mariental Street renamed after late Katrina Hanse-Himarwa

One of the longest streets in Mariental was today renamed Katrina Hanse-Himarwa Street. 

Urban and Rural Development Deputy Minister Evelyne !Nawases-Taeyele said the street naming is a testament to Hanse-Himarwa's legacy and impact. 

Widower Ghenno Himarwa reflected on the adversities his wife experienced.

He revealed at the event that they are currently writing a book on her life.

Himarwa described his wife as someone who was dedicated to service and to the Swapo Party and loved Namibia deeply. 

 

Procession held for Katrina Hanse-Himarwa

Namibians are remembering the former Education Minister, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, who died on Sunday for her contribution to the country's education system. 

Hanse-Himarwa has been conferred an official funeral.

The 57-year-old Hanse-Himarwa served as minister of education from 2015 to 2019, during which she oversaw reforms in the sector.

The procession accompanying the remains of the late former minister started at Soweto Market in Windhoek this morning.

The procession will lead to Mariental in the Hardap Region, where she will be buried this weekend.

Katrina Hanse-Himarwa accorded official funeral

President Nangolo Mbumba has conferred an Official Funeral on the late former Minister of Education, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa.

The Presidency announced that President Mbumba accepted the recommendation from the National Honours Committee and made the conferment as per Section 3(1) of the Conferment of National Honours Act.

The late Hanse-Himarwa's remains will be interred on the 27th of July in Mariental as agreed upon with her family.

The former Education Minister died on July 14 in a Windhoek hospital, where she was battling cancer.

Hundreds attend Hanse-Himarwa's memorial service in Soweto

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Tanidare Lutheran Church in Windhoek's Soweto over the weekend to pay their last respects to the late former minister of education, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, during the final memorial service. 

Mourners included former First Lady Monica Geingos, Deputy Ministers Jennely Matundu, Faustina Caley, Alexia Manombe-Ncube, Judge Nate Ndaendapo, Central Bank Governor Johannes !Gawaxab, Public Service Commission Chairperson Salman Jacobs, and Lawyer Sisa Namandje, as well as politburo and central committee members of the Swapo Party.

Katrina Hanse-Himarwa's tenure as Minister of Education was marked by her relentless pursuit of quality education.

These are the sentiments of Deputy Minister Faustina Caley, who says Hanse-Himarwa was a dedicated educator who initiated many noteworthy programmes while serving as minister.

The deputy minister was speaking at a candlelight vigil in honour of the late former minister in Windhoek.

Staff at the Education Ministry's headquarters are still coming to terms with the death of their former minister, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa.

The Swapo Party Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, has described the late Katrina Hanse-Himarwa as a dedicated freedom fighter and servant of the people. 

The party conveyed its message of condolences to the family.

Shaningwa, in a statement, says Hanse-Himarwa joined the Swapo Party during a perilous era under the mentorship of the late Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi. 

In those difficult times, associating with liberation efforts under the Swapo banner was seen as a death sentence by the apartheid regime.

Family and close friends gathered at the Hanse-Himarwa residence in the capital to grieve the death of the renowned politician.

Those who gathered described her as a formidable politician and a passionate educator.

Hanse-Himarwa's prominence in the political sphere started after she concluded her term as a Swapo party councillor overseeing the Mariental Rural constituency in the Hardap Region.

Former Education Minister Katrina Hanse-Himarwa has died.

Hanse-Himarwa (57) died early this morning at a local hospital, where she was battling stomach cancer.

According to sources, the former minister was in the high care unit in a coma but recovered and was moved to a normal ward, where she succumbed this morning.

An educator by profession, Hanse-Himarwa served as Minister of Education, Arts, and Culture from 2015 to 2019; before that, she served as Governor of the Hardap Region from 2004 to 2015.
