The government aims to achieve at least 20 kg of fish consumption per person per year and about 100,000 metric tonnes of mackerel sold locally.
The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, stated this when launching the National Fish Consumption Day at Walvis Bay.
The main event will be held on September 14 in the Hardap Region.
Klazen says the focus this year is on nourishing communities and sustaining the future through educating every Namibian on the benefits of consuming and making a living from fish.
Klazen's speech was delivered on his behalf by Erongo Governor, Neville Andre.
"I am informed that, as part of promoting enterprise development, NFCPT launched the Agency Distribution Pilot Project on April 19, 2024. The project aimed at collaborating with local businesses nationwide to act as a wholesale distributor, allowing community-based entrepreneurs to sell fish and fish products to sustain themselves and their communities. I am sure that you will agree with me that this initiative aligns with this year's theme, "Nourishing Communities, Sustaining Future."
The Trust annually raises funds for educational development in the host region, including through procuring essentials for schools.
"Similarly, the Trust will be handing over 70 scientific calculators worth N$ 32,602.50 for Grade 11 learners at Daweb Senior Secondary School in the Hardap Region. The need was outlined by the acting principal of the school in May 2024, when the Chief Executive Officer visited the school with his marketing team as part of the Catch Them Young campaign at the school. I am pleased to note that NFCPT does not solemnly focus on their mandate but also extends a helping hand whenever they have identified a need at the schools at which they visit through various initiatives they carry out."
Corporates are invited to join the trust to enable its benefit to more needy communities.
