The 2023 National Fish Consumption Survey indicates that the Hardap Region remains one of the leading meat-consuming regions in Namibia, with fish consumption still seen as a luxury. 

The government aims to achieve at least 20 kg of fish consumption per person per year and about 100,000 metric tonnes of mackerel sold locally.

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, stated this when launching the National Fish Consumption Day at Walvis Bay.
