The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, has commended the efforts and dedication shown by the Katuuo family at Orevia village for setting up a garden project to address food security and job creation.

Schlettwein says it is a massive achievement to see a project of this nature thriving in a typical communal area.

He adds that this project warrants being fully supported by the government and other key roleplayers so that it can inspire the community.

Katuuo family member Kakunaa narrates that the family came up with the garden project during the COVID pandemic when borders were closed and many families were affected by hunger.

Today, the garden project continues to produce enough crop variety despite a few challenges, such as limited ploughing equipment and adequate water provision.

Katuuo says that her passion for agriculture enables her to weather daily life.

Katuuo added that the dream is to develop an agricultural college at their site if all goes as planned.

The Director for Water Supply and Sanitation Coordination in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Elijah Ngurare, says it is high time that young people take centre stage in the agricultural sector and become employers.

Dr. Ngurare implored agriculturists in communal and commercial areas to work hard to ensure a self-sustainable nation.
