The police are pleading with motorists to exercise caution and abide by traffic rules and regulations during this long weekend and beyond.
Police Spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi said in a statement that with many national, regional, and private events lined up from the 23rd to the 27th of August 2024, roads are sure to become congested.
In these circumstances, some drivers may get agitated and exhibit reckless behavior, potentially leading to tragedy on the national highways.
It is in this light that Deputy Commissioner Shikwambi stresses the importance of adhering to road safety measures.
The key advice Shikwambi gives is to exercise patience, plan trips in advance, and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
"Ensure your vehicle is in optimal condition, this includes checking tires, brakes, lights, and fluid levels to avoid any issues while on the road. While traveling, it is imperative to follow all displayed speed limits and traffic regulations. Staying focused on driving and avoiding distractions such as mobile phone use are essential for road safety, and To reduce road accidents, particularly on the B I and B2 highways, the Namibian Police Force Traffic Law Enforcement Officers will conduct road safety operations, which include intensifying patrols and mobile roadblocks on these highways."
The public is encouraged to report reckless and negligent drivers by dialing 10111, sharing information at any traffic checkpoint, or seeking assistance from the officers.
