The ||Kharas Health Directorate, in collaboration with InterHealth Namibia, has officially launched the HIV adherence campaign, "Undetectable = Untransmissible" (U=U).
The launch event, held in Keetmanshoop, was officiated by ||Kharas Regional Council Chairperson, Joseph Isaack. The U=U campaign aims to reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV, encouraging them to test regularly and adhere to treatment, reducing the viral load to an undetectable level, which prevents transmission.
"It is crucial that both HIV-positive individuals and their partners understand that a suppressed viral load significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission," Isaack said at the event. "As we launch the U=U concept today, let us commit to spreading this life-affirming message far and wide. We must ensure that every person living with HIV has access to the treatment they need to achieve an undetectable viral load. Together, we can continue to challenge the stigma and discrimination that still exist and advocate for policies that protect the lives and rights of people living with HIV."
HIV Champions also shared personal testimonies, advocating for the campaign:
Francis Jansen, HIV Champion:
"Don't let it be about what others think of you—focus on what you think of yourself. Mistakes are part of growth; everyone makes them. I remember the moment my partner came back, and I shared my results with him. He looked at me and said, 'That's your name on that paper, you deal with it in your own way, don't include me in your mess.' That day, I made the choice to stand up and take control of my life."
Cleopatra Orr, HIV Champion:
"I’m here doing HIV prevention work for Keetmanshoop. To those who aren't on treatment, and to those who are HIV-negative, I urge you—come and get your PrEP. We didn’t have that privilege before, but you do. Take the opportunity, stay negative. I’m standing here today, and I am HIV-negative."
