Negotiations for the Pact of the Future and the Global Compact, which will be adopted at the end of the Summit of the Future, are in their final stages. 

The Pact has to be agreed upon by all UN member states by consensus.

Namibia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Neville Gertze, confirmed these developments to nbc News following a briefing with President Nangolo Mbumba on Wednesday.

Ambassador Gertze said the negotiations have taken this long because of the delicate issues being discussed, which have the potential to address world challenges. 

So far, the draft Pact contains 58 actions that the UN member states are negotiating ahead of the summit.

The actions include calls for countries to redouble efforts to build and sustain peaceful, inclusive, and just societies, address the root causes of conflicts, and take concrete and practical measures to protect all civilians in armed conflict.

The countries are further expected to reaffirm their commitment to preventive diplomacy, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the importance of dialogue between states.

Namibia is co-facilitating the Summit of the Future alongside Germany.
