The City of Windhoek is urging the public to refrain from giving money to individuals begging on the streets; as it says, such acts encourage more street begging and keep people trapped in a cycle of poverty. 

According to the City of Windhoek's Spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya, the city has observed a concerning increase in the number of children begging on the streets of Windhoek, placing them at risk of harm and exploitation.

Amutenya stressed that child begging is a complex problem that cannot be solved by giving them money.

Therefore, she says, the City of Windhoek is urging the public to refrain from giving money to child beggars and encourage long-term solutions that address the issue of child beggars in Windhoek streets.

She is calling on the public to assist in supporting organisations that work to end child begging and its causes. 

Amutenya says these organisations offer holistic solutions, such as rescuing children from the streets, providing them with shelter, education, and counselling, and advocating for their rights.
