The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has condemned violence and intimidation among political parties as the country approaches elections. 

The commission is therefore urging all political parties to engage with each other constructively and to respect difference while seeking common ground for the collective good of all.

ECN has sent out a caution after an altercation between members of the Swapo Party and the Landless People's Movement in Mariental recently.

Its spokesperson De Wet Siluka, says the commission holds the view that these incidents constitute a serious breach of the democratic principles that underpin the electoral processes. 

He added that such incidents do not only undermine the democratic process but also instill fear and erode public trust. 

The ECN also says these actions contradict the code of conduct for political parties and political organisations as stipulated in the Electoral Act. 

According to clause five of the code of conduct, political-motivated violence or intimidation in any form, including the incitement or encouragement of violence or threats based on political affiliation, is prohibited. 

Siluka says the commission expects all political parties to adhere to these regulations and to act in a manner that upholds the dignity of the democratic process.

ECN is therefore imploring all political parties to recommit themselves to the principals of non-violence and civility and to address political difference through dialogue, debates, and other democratic processes.
