Growing up in poverty doesn't determine one's future, but escaping hardship is no easy feat.
Journalist-turned-author Selima Henock’s inspiring story of resilience attests to this.
In her newly released book, My Nakedness, Henock reflects on her humble beginnings in a shack made of oil barrels and the ridicule she endured for her circumstances.
Born and raised in Rehoboth's Block E of Blikkies Dorp, Henock always held onto a dream—a dream that became a reality with the launch of her debut book.
My Nakedness is a bold, introspective work that explores themes of vulnerability, identity, and the search for belonging.
Henock's book offers readers a deep look into her life, covering everything from her career and family to marriage, divorce, and mental health struggles.
Despite facing challenges growing up, Henock’s determination never wavered.
Through her writing, she encourages others to confront their own truths and peel back the layers of protection we all carry.
Reflecting on her journey, Henock shares, “In my childhood, I thought of committing suicide. During my divorce, I thought of it again. But God carried me through, and I’m here to testify to His goodness. Though we didn’t have much, we had loving parents who encouraged us. I don’t want you to learn from my experiences, but maybe you can pick up a thing or two.”
Henock's story is not just about her perseverance, but also a celebration of Namibian literature.
Guest speaker Dr. Lisho Mundia praised Henock’s work, describing it as "legacy writing," and adding that her autobiography demonstrates great courage, strong character, and determination. Her sister, Dina Nghilukilwa, echoed this sentiment, saying, “What you did is great. One day, if you’re not here, your book will be, and future generations will learn who Selima Henock was.”
Henock’s journey proves that with perseverance, dreams can become reality. My Nakedness embodies her belief in God’s plan for her life and her commitment to overcoming adversity.
