Namibia has raised over N$1.7 million for its national pavilion for the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In a media statement from the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF), it says the sponsorship will enhance Namibia’s visibility at COP29, facilitating engagement with global stakeholders and bolstering the country’s ability to influence international climate policy.

The COP29 is slated to take place from the 11th to the 22nd of next month in Baku, Azerbaijan. 

The sponsorship contributions were made by eight companies, with the EIF giving the highest amount of N$1 million, followed by Bank Windhoek with N$300,000, Capricorn Foundation with N$200,000, and N$100,000 from Climate Fund Managers.

The pavilion, EIF says, will be Namibia’s primary platform for showcasing its climate actions, fostering international partnerships, and presenting its sustainable development projects. 

The sponsorships were handed over at a stakeholder preparatory meeting focusing on Namibia’s strategy for COP29 in Windhoek yesterday (Wed). 
 
The meeting focused on Namibia’s national priorities when it comes to climate change mitigation and adaptation, how Namibia will address the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund, approved at COP28, as well as the technical work to implement carbon markets under the Paris Agreement.

The EIF reiterated that Namibia’s participation at COP29 underscores its commitment to addressing climate change while also emphasising the importance of increased climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building to achieve both national and global climate goals.
