The police in Oshana continue to increase police visibility patrols to curb crime in hotspot areas.

The police opened a satellite police station at Oshoopala informal settlement at Oshakati.

Oshoopala, which was previously known as Amunghambya, has over the years been a crime hotspot area and a haven for criminals.

The regional commander in Oshana, commissioner Naftal Sackaria Lungameni, says Oshoopala has been a hideout for criminals fleeing the long arm of the law.

Law-abiding citizens have not been at liberty to disclose criminal activities or the fugitives whereabouts, as they fear that the criminals will come after them.

Lungameni says the status quo has since changed and the public is working hand-in-hand with the police.

Another police station was commissioned at the Onawa informal settlement in August.

Since the opening of the police station two weeks ago, the police have been patrolling on foot as there are limited vehicles in the region.

The police also confiscated weapons, including knives, pangas, and remotes to jam cars.

Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango says the council remains committed to ensuring safety for all its residents.

Hango further says the police station at Oshoopala is a strategic move that allows the council to redirect its resources to areas that require immediate attention and to establish an effective police presence in crime hotspot areas.

Police officers who served with dedication for 30 years received medals and some promotions.

Constable Alexandre Otto was promoted to the rank of inspector and reservist coordinator for Ondangwa police station.
