The pharmaceutical profession has made tremendous strides over the years, with pharmacists deployed at all district hospitals across the country.

This was revealed at the launch of World Pharmacist Week in Windhoek.

As of March this year, Namibia has registered 766 pharmacists, 459 pharmacist assistants, and 40 pharmaceutical technicians.

The World Pharmacist Week serves as an essential platform for raising awareness about the role of pharmacists, pharmacist assistants, and pharmaceutical technicians, as well as recognising how they help improve patients's outcomes, ensure the safe use of medicines, and contribute to public health in the country.

The Director of General Services in the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Postrick Kapule, highlighted the importance of continuous professional dedication and the role of pharmacies in safeguarding public health.

"The pharmaceutical sector must continuously evolve in response to new health challenges, emerging diseases, and advancements in medical science. This week offers us a moment to reflect on the evolving landscape of healthcare and how pharmacy professionals can further contribute to addressing global and national health needs."

Pharmacy professionals not only dispense medication but also provide vital guidance on its safe and effective use, ensuring that the right medicines reach those in need and enhancing quality of life.

The Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Naita Nghishekwa, stated that pharmacists have a fundamental role to play in universal health coverage.

"Pharmacists, pharmacist assistants, and pharmaceutical technicians are key healthcare personnel whose interventions ensure that medicines are available and used safely and effectively. Their involvement in medicine management, patient safety, and rational use of medicines contributes significantly to improving health outcomes. Whether in hospital settings, community pharmacies, regulation, or research, pharmacists ensure that the right medicine is delivered at the right time with the correct dosage to improve patient outcomes."

World Pharmacy Week is celebrated under the theme "Pharmacists Meeting Global Health Needs."
