The Windhoek-Okahandja dual carriageway has been re-classified and upgraded from B1 to A1 road as per the road classification standards.

President Nangolo Mbumba inaugurated the dual carriageway, the only A-rated road in Namibia, at the Gross Barmen Interchange.

Dr. Mbumba hailed the completion of the road as a commendable testament to the smooth collaboration of various partners who share the national vision to develop Namibia.

The construction of the entire Windhoek-Okahandja freeway began in 2014, with former President Hifikepunye Pohamba instructing that the final product complies with the highest quality standards.

The project was divided into three sections to cover various stretches, with the last phase stretching from the Omakunde River up to the Otjiwarongo and Karibib roads.

For President Mbumba, these deliberate investments are made by the government in line with the strategic objectives of Vision 2030, national development plans, and the Harambee Prosperity Plans to support corresponding increases in economic activity.

"Indeed, this dual carriageway will play a pivotal role in supporting the Namibian economy by allowing safe and quick transport turnaround times to and from the capital city (Windhoek) to the rest of the country. Also, being centrally located as a conduit to the Trans-Kalahari, Trans-Caprivi, Trans-Cunene, and Trans-Oranje corridors, the dual carriageway further strengthens Namibia's position as a gateway for landlocked SADC countries to efficiently and effectively move cargo through the Port of Walvis Bay."

On average, about 4,000 passenger vehicles and trucks carrying goods via other highways make use of the Windhoek-Okahandja freeway daily.

President Mbumba paid tribute to the vision of his predecessors to have the road constructed and parts upgraded.

"Therefore, as we officially commission the Okahandja-Windhoek dual roadway, we pay tribute to the foresight and visionary leadership of President Pohamba and the late President Geingob, which have enabled us to stand on their strong and tall shoulders and see ahead and complete this mission today."

The Windhoek-Okahandja freeway includes ten interchanges and river bridges, which feed traffic onto the highway, easing the flow of traffic.

The completion of the Windhoek-Okahandja freeway adds to the Road Authority's plans to broaden the country's transportation network.

The dual carriageway was constructed for N$3 billion.
