The staff at Kapani Combined School are seeking assistance from both the Ministry of Education and the local business community to enhance the school's infrastructure.
The school serves learners from the local area and surrounding villages and is in urgent need of facilities to improve the learning and teaching experience.
Among the most pressing needs are flushing toilets, as both staff and students currently rely on a single pit latrine. Additionally, there is a demand for adequate office space for staff members, who are currently using storerooms as offices.
Zachariah Sankwasa, the school principal, emphasized the urgency of the situation: "We particularly need an administration block, a science lab, a library, and a school hall. With the rainy season approaching, we face significant challenges. The school hall is crucial for holding various activities."
He made these remarks during a handover ceremony for two science kits donated to the school by Paul and Suzzane Kaiser, a couple from Switzerland who have previously supported the Zambezi Region's education sector. The kits will benefit students in grades four to ten and are intended to enhance their practical skills and knowledge in science subjects.
However, the lack of proper storage facilities for the equipment poses another challenge. Chrisco Siyoto, the cluster center principal for Linyanti, urged the school board members to mobilize resources for infrastructure development.
"Principal, do we have a laboratory here? We do not, and it is the responsibility of the newly elected school board members to ensure that plans are in place to establish one. This equipment cannot be stored in a storeroom; it does not belong there. As a rural school, we must do everything we can to keep it safe," he said.
Siyoto expressed disappointment over the lack of support from local businesses, noting that assistance often comes from foreign benefactors.
