President Nangolo Mbumba has urged Namibians to provide President-elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah with the necessary support to enable her to assume successfully, the duties of Head of State next year.

Dr. Mbumba delivered a statement to the nation following the conclusion of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

"Namibians in their majority wrote a new chapter in the history of their constitutional democracy by electing the first female President of the Republic of Namibia, Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.  I congratulate Her Excellency, Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah on her brilliant victory. I have no doubt that under her capable and compassionate leadership, the future of the Namibian people can only be brighter. In the days and months ahead, we should all provide the President-Elect with the necessary support to enable her to successfully assume the important duties of Head of State of the Republic of Namibia on the 21st of March 2025."

President Mbumba equally congratulated all the candidates who made it to the National Assembly.

"As incoming members of the National Assembly, I encourage you to be exemplary and to prepare thoroughly for the legislative tasks that lie ahead of you. For some, it might not be the electoral outcome they had hoped for. However, in a democracy and the processes of competitive elections, there will always be winners and losers. More important, there is always a next time. Over the past 34 years, we have consolidated democratic processes, systems and institutions. In that vein, our institutions should at all times remain the final arbiters of our differences, including during or after elections."

The President is proud of the peaceful conduct of Namibians during the electoral process, nothwithstanding the challenges encountered.

At the request of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Mbumba extended the voting period at selected polling stations by two additional days.

He says he signed the proclamation extending the voting period, fully conscious of the fundamental right of Namibian citizens of voting age.

"I did so fully aware that when we say that the Namibian people are sovereign, we say so on the basis of their hard-earned right to vote for leaders and political parties of their choice during elections. It is a right we must defend at all times."

The 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections were the 8th since Namibia gained independence.
