2025 began with much-anticipated rains in Windhoek, bringing relief to many after months of dry weather.

However, the downpours quickly turned into a nightmare for some residents, leaving them grappling with flooding and property damage. 

In Soweto, Katutura, a 73-year-old pensioner's home was severely impacted when heavy rains tore off her roof, flooding the house and damaging personal belongings, including her sewing machine, essential for her tailoring work. 

Her son had to act swiftly in the early hours to temporarily patch the roof using available household materials.

Meanwhile, in Okuryangava, Magano Iikwambi woke up to find her home completely flooded.

Rising water levels caused extensive damage to furniture, appliances, and other possessions, forcing her to seek temporary shelter elsewhere.

The City of Windhoek issued a flood preparedness statement and safety tips for residents last week.

With the rains persisting, authorities emphasise the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent further incidents in the days ahead.
