-Namibia hosted a successful COSAFA Castle cup tournament according to the Local Organising Committee Chairperson Roger Kambatuku. Namibia’s ability to host international sporting events manifested in the last three weeks as Windhoek played host to the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup, delivered with utmost diligence and applauds from all involved. Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairperson Roger Kambatuku says, the hosting of the regional football spectacle was rated highly and it was time to commend all that makes it necessary. “We really have to thank our government, sponsor Castle Lager and other sponsors, the whole LOC team for a job well done. Everyone who came for this competition was pleased and we remain the sought-after host due to the level of efficiency in how we conduct ourselves as Namibians. Attendance was poor at some games but overall better and greater with the home side’s game and the final day as well.” Kambatuku stated. He adds special mention to the fans who were led by the first citizen of Namibia, President Dr. Hage Geingob. “Special thank you to all the fans that came to support the tournament, braving the cold. And a very special thanks for their support to the Brave Warriors as well, it was exceptional and gave the tournament a different dimension indeed. The Presence of the President was another fond memory all participants will go back with. His interest in the game continues and pushed us to remain on the ball and do our best at all times, very important”, narrates Kambatuku. “Cosafa and other dignitaries we had over the period were pleased with the organization and I’m sure it will not be long before Namibia get to host another sporting event”, reveals Kambatuku. South Africa won the tournament, 3-2 over Botswana as Namibia finished fifth overall with the Plate Section honors, beating Zambia 1-0. Swaziland's Felix Bandehorst top scored with five of the 53 goals scored during the 23 matches of the Tournament. Namibia's Max Mbaeva walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award, while Botswana’s Onkabetse Makgantai was voted Player of the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup finals. The competition will return to Moruleng, South Africa in 2017 where Namibia won their first Cosafa title in 2015.
