In the past two weeks, police in the Erongo Region have conducted a significant operation in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, resulting in the seizure of illegal drugs, stolen goods, and electronic devices valued at over N$1 million.
This operation marks a substantial step in the fight against drug trafficking, street robberies, and gang-related crime in these coastal towns.
As part of this special operation, several suspects believed to be involved in street crime and harassment were arrested.
The crackdown disrupted drug dealers and gangs, leading to the discovery of sizable quantities of drugs and stolen property.
Authorities have commended the teamwork and strategy behind the operation, which aims to provide relief to residents affected by escalating crime.
The police have pledged to continue their efforts to dismantle criminal networks and enhance safety in the region.
Erongo police commander, Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona urged Namibians to assist the police in combating crime by refraining from supporting illegal markets.
"Community perception of safety has improved due to the visibility and presence of the police. This is what we strive for, as it fosters confidence in our common team and the Namibian police force. In conclusion, I encourage community members to consider joining the police service; you too can act as a police officer by reporting any crime occurring in your neighborhood. I also urge the establishment of neighborhood watch groups."
He noted that the presence and visibility of police officers in the community have significantly improved local residents' perception of safety.
"In Walvis Bay, we have primarily encountered individuals aged 29 to 55, with only two arrests. Most of those involved in criminal activities appear to be youth under the age of 48. This trend indicates that we are losing our younger generation to drugs and crime."
Community members are encouraged to become involved with Nampol reservists, neighborhood watch groups, youth against crime initiatives, and other community policing forums to support Nampol's daily activities and help eradicate crime in the region.
