
On February 4, 2024, Namibia lost its president, Hage Geingob, who died at the age of 82 after battling cancer. His death marked the end of a long and influential political career.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Nangolo Mbumba, who was VP at that time, announced the news on nbc, describing Geingob as a steadfast leader who guided Namibia through many challenges. Throughout his presidency, Geingob championed democracy, human rights, and good governance.
Tributes poured in from across the world, honouring his contributions to Namibia and Africa. The government declared a period of national mourning, leading up to a state funeral on February 25 at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek, the first time Namibia buried a sitting president.
Mourners lined Independence Avenue as Geingob’s remains were transported, while memorial services took place nationwide. At the state memorial, former First Lady Monica Geingos delivered an emotional tribute, reflecting on their journey together and his commitment to the nation.
Thousands gathered at Independence Stadium to honour Geingob through song and unity. The funeral was attended by dignitaries from across the world, marking the farewell of a leader who shaped Namibia’s modern history.
