The Oshana Regional Council on Friday rolled-out a programme to support goat farmers.

The Director of Planning in the Oshana Regional Council Teopolina Mbangula says the initiative is aimed at empowering local farmers and enhancing food security, while growing the local economy.

The first hand-over took place in the Ongwediva Constituency, where Mbangula emphasised the potential benefit of goat farming, stating that the manure can be used as fertilizer on crop fields and so help boost food production.

In addition, Mbangula said recipients are expected to farm and breed goats for the benefit of the next beneficiaries.

Hammeriza Shilunga, a beneficiary from the Ongwediva Constituency, thanked government for coming to their aid and she encouraged other farmers to take farming seriously and also ask God to send more rain in order to get enough feed for the livestock.

The farmers also received training on animal husbandry, animal health and on feeding by Agriculture Ministry officials.
