The Swapo Party's Oshana branch held a self-introspection following the recently held Presidential and National Assembly Elections, which saw an 11% decrease in support.
Chairperson of the leaders assigned to the region, Veikko Nekundi, said the decline in the party support can sometimes be attributed to those who the party has put in structures and end up working against the benefit of their communities, a practice he said should end.
Nekundi added that some leaders have a tendency to gossip about each other's unilateral actions rather than addressing the problem and finding an amicable solution that benefits the people while maintaining the party's good standing.
He added that a decline in votes means the party might not be doing something right, and if members don't want to self-correct and adapt to change, it might end up costing the party the support it needs to make critical decisions.
"The election results are a testimony that not everything we are doing is correct. That is the reality, and we must not hide away from that fact; if we hide away from that fact, we shall never return from where we are. If we are here only to say everything is good and anyone who says that is wrong, we hate that person. Whoever says that is a murderer of the party, is a killer of the party. Because things aren't correct."
He added that in the various districts, branches, and sections of the Oshana Region, there are thousands of members chosen to provide leadership that addresses the needs of the people.
Also speaking at the same occasion was the party's regional coordinator, Werner Iita, who said the evaluation of election results was necessary as it will also shed light on challenges that caused the party not to perform well so they can nip them in the bud.
In 2019, the party garnered 65% in the Oshana Region and only managed 54% in 2024.
