Fumu Erwin Munika Mbambo, the traditional leader of the Hambukushu people, described the late Founding President Dr. Sam Nujoma as a courageous individual who faced challenges directly.
In an interview with NBC News, Fumu Mbambo reminisced about Dr. Nujoma's frequent visits, expressing his eagerness to join them on the frontlines.
Before Namibia's independence, Fumu Mbambo was a member of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), fighting for the country’s freedom. He
recounted, "He used to go to the frontline, unlike other presidents who merely talk. Nujoma would go to the frontlines with his own AK-47. Sometimes we fighters had to stop him because we didn't want to lose him. I remember one day when he came to my camp to spend the night. He traveled from Lusaka to the bush just to be with my soldiers. During the night, Nujoma attempted to sneak out with his gun, eager to confront the enemy. He was truly courageous, like no other. There are politicians today who claim to be leaders, but I doubt they could endure the same hardships Nujoma faced."
The Hambukushu leader urged the younger generation to emulate Dr. Nujoma's
example. "They should follow in the footsteps of Sam Nujoma to protect our country, our land, and our people. No one will come to defend us; it's up to us, the Namibian nation. Young people, both boys and girls, must take this seriously. Be courageous like Nujoma, defend your motherland, and stand up to fight. Remember, you are not just fighting for yourselves; you are fighting for future generations. We fought for you, and now it’s your turn to fight for those who will come after you. Always keep this in mind."
Our news team also spoke with Ambrosius Kumbwa, President of the All People's Party. Although he never met Dr. Nujoma, he has always drawn inspiration from his story.
"When Tate Nujoma speaks, even if you don't want to listen, his powerful voice and energy compel you to pay attention. I appreciate his emphasis on tactics; when you recognize a problem you may not be able to overcome, you must devise alternative strategies to succeed, especially against the enemy. People should learn from the late His Excellency Sam Nujoma. Bravery can help us solve problems, and we must have the courage and determination to never give up. The journey through Africa to visit countries that gained independence before Namibia was not easy. We must cultivate patience and purpose to achieve our objectives."
